Review: Gates - You Are All You Have Left To Fear
This is supposed to be the jaded blog, the never impressed site that only chats about the old days. As of late we have had an amazing string bands and labels giving it their all and acknowledging the hey day of this genre. Few bands I hear have hit me as hard as Gates' first EP The Sun Will Rise And Lead Me Home did last year. Their EP was the best parts of Jejune, Mineral and Elliott. May 29th, their follow up You Are All You Have Left to Fear is available and was worth the wait.
Truthfully, I was anticipating the new EP the moment I heard "To Those Who Fell…" which was released as a teaser EP on YouTube early this month. The song ebbs and flows with the sonic hits and one note riffs with an unrelenting pace. The short duration led me to repeat it 10 times until I had a co-worker ask me if my computer had an issue. If there is a movie that needs a song for a scene of two lovers kissing or maybe a giant chase scene and a long, extended crash should take notice of this song. It leads into "… And To Those Who Carry On", effortlessly. As the song builds to a crescendo you can easily visualize the singalong both at a basement show or 3000 kids jumping up and down screaming their hearts out with their cell phone firmly in hand capturing it for eternity. Everything is just better on this EP and I can't give this record a bigger show of support. With the assumed knowledge you love this scene, genre and need something to tide you over until Chris Simpson gets the band back together I can proudly say Gates will be the soundtrack to your summer.
